I had a client once who was very invested in his people. This client was a GOOD leader. He wanted to equip his group even more through leadership development. He was the kind of leader who led by EXAMPLE. But there was a problem…
He said that he felt a distance with his team. He felt that they were not as close as he wanted them to be. Because of this, he didn’t feel that they were as aligned as they could be.
In his mind, he was doing all the right things: one-on-ones, meetings, coordinating activities, staying in consistent communication about business operations, progress toward goals, etc. And he wasn’t sure what the disconnect was.
As we began working with him and his team, we discovered together that his natural wiring led him to be way more sociable than most of his teammates.
This meant that he was interpreting their lack of ENERGY and ENTHUSIASM to spend time together as a lack of ENGAGEMENT and SATISFACTION with the team itself.
During one particular group session, he was honest with them about what he was experiencing. And they quickly confirmed that they were committed and LOVED being part of his team. Quite simply: they were not wired to get energy the same way he was.
After realizing this, he was relieved to know that his team was actually doing really well. And for him, the pressure was off to try to “fix” something that was simply a result of personality differences.
It’s amazing how mere awareness can actually be a solution to many issues we face in working with our team.
