Why is it that so many leaders struggle with the ‘people’ side (aka the ‘soft skill’) of leadership?
Most leaders become leaders much as I did.
They perform their job really well…they’re results-driven, hard-working, committed and, as a result, they get promoted up to being the leader of others doing the same work.
The problem with this very common practice is that the skills it takes someone to do their job are not the same skills it takes to LEAD OTHERS doing the job.
The transition from individual contributor to leader most often creates a skill gap that results in significant stress and frustration for both the leaders and the people they lead.
Every leader wants a great team, and every team wants a great leader…yet today we know that the majority of the workforce in our country is disengaged.
This disengagement is often traced back to a lack of leadership skills.
According to Gallup & American Psychological Association surveys of over 195k employees:
75% ~ say their boss is the most stressful part of their job,
65% ~ would take a new boss over a pay raise, and
40% ~ leave companies because they can’t get along with their boss.
I’ve been in business and leadership for over 30 years, and I can tell you it doesn’t have to be this way.
Like one leader who, when we met, was:
-unintentionally breaking relationships with her team,
-struggling to keep them motivated, and
-experiencing poor productivity and efficiency numbers in her department.
We worked with her through the 4 phases of The Coach Approach to Leadership™ to help her close the leadership skill gap and develop a coach mindset to effectively lead multiple generations in the workforce.
She later became the model for employee engagement in her company.
And not only that…
…but because she has continued to use what she learned, she recently shared with me that her team’s “MORALE IS AT AL ALL-TIME HIGH DESPITE THE PANDEMIC AND BEING REQUIRED TO WORK REMOTELY FOR 1 ½ year.”
The 4 phases of The Coach Approach to Leadership™ include:
- Phase 01. DISCOVER: Understand and leverage your leadership DNA and measure the impact your leadership is having on the organization.
- Phase 02. RELATE: Elevate accountability, build higher levels of trust, and effectively influence others.
- Phase 03. COACH: Deep dive into understanding human behavior and develop the mindset and skillset to be a great coach.
- Phase 04. ACHIEVE: Accelerate your results by empowering others to reach higher levels of success.
