If it’s not forward, it’s backward. And I think we all want to move FORWARD in our leadership, right? I know I do.
When I became a coach, I was surprised by how many coaching principles apply to leadership.
I realized great leadership, effective leadership looks most like great coaching.
The best leaders I know are successful in their leadership to the extent that they embody these coaching principles.
So here’s how to know if you’re moving forward or backward in leadership:
“Boss” Leader = Backward

✖️ Only thinks in terms of numbers and results
✖️ Views people as a means to an end
✖️ Fixed mindset about self and others
✖️ Gets defensive and doesn’t listen
✖️ Has an “I” mentality
“Coach” Leader = Forward
🎯Collaborative, curious, and good listener
🎯Thinks in terms of motivating team toward a vision of impact
🎯Views people as dynamic, creative contributors
🎯Growth mindset about self and others
🎯Seeks feedback and receives it well
🎯Has a “we” mentality
