What is coaching and why be a coach leader?

So, what is coaching and why would you want to be a COACH LEADER anyway?

Maybe you’ve heard the term “coaching” used at a networking event, or thrown around in business or in a conversation with colleagues.

Perhaps until now, you’ve associated “coaching” with a sport.

Maybe till now, it has just seemed too theoretical and not practical enough.

Possibly up to now, it has just looked like positive affirmations, and you’d rather deal in more concrete approaches.

I get it.

Coaching was not an industry I expected to be in. I’d worked for years in corporate, but in 2008, I found myself at a crossroad in my career. In my mid-30s, I asked myself: “What do I really want to be when I grow up?” (Not what you typically ask at that age…lol…)

My answer ended up being the very definition of coaching, and I didn’t even know it at the time!

My answer? “I believe God put me on earth to equip, encourage, and empower others to be their best and reach their full potential.”

Later, I discovered that coaching would allow me to do exactly that.

I combined my love for helping people grow with my passion for business and leadership. I now wholeheartedly believe in coaching and its power to bring transformation and positive, breakthrough results – because I see it happen over and over again.

When leaders are equipped to be better coaches, they create the same transformation in their team and organization.

To eliminate any misconceptions and offer you a bit more clarity, here is the official definition by The International Coaching Federation: “Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

COACHING HELPS YOU:
  • Clarify your vision
  • Identify where you are today in relation to your vision
  • Go from where you are now to where you want to be
  • Challenge limited thinking and remove obstacles & barriers to success
  • Intentionally decide on ‘who’ you want to be and ‘how’ you want to achieve the vision
  • Celebrate milestones and growth

To understand what it IS, it’s also helpful to understand what it ISN’T…

COACHING ISN’T:
  • Therapy (seeking to resolve the past)
  • Mentoring (imparting knowledge and advice from previous experience)
  • Consulting (advising/directing based on a particular expertise)
  • Teaching (sharing learned theories, ideas, concepts)
  • Parenting (directing based on what the parent/adult sees as best)
