What is a leadership dream team, and how do you know if you have one?

I was talking with someone recently who said: I’ve heard you talk often about a leadership dream team. What is a dream team exactly?

Well, the answer is nuanced and can look different with each group of leaders. It can vary based on levels of leadership, industries, existing company culture, and more.

BUT, based on the results of our Dream Team exercises with many leadership teams we have supported over the last few years, here are the characteristics that REPEATEDLY occurred as the DESIRED TRAITS for a leadership dream team.

Across industries, levels of leadership, and existing company culture, these desired traits stayed consistent and in high demand.

These are what leaders themselves look for in a Dream Team and in order of highest to lowest ranking:

The “FRUIT” or ABOVE THE LINE, at the SURFACE Characteristics

  • Clear vision
  • Defined goals
  • Clear roles and responsibilities
  • Focused and aligned on priorities

The “ROOT” or Qualities and Characteristics OFTEN BELOW THE SURFACE

  • Trust (this one was seen as the most important, most requested, most desired)
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and change
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Accountability
  • Honesty
  • Open Mindedness
  • Fun
  • Respect
  • Supportive
  • Leverage and acknowledge the strengths of each team member
  • Ability to listen

Consider these characteristics in comparison to how YOUR leadership team operates. Do these resonate with you? How well is your leadership team showing up as compared to this list of DREAM TEAM characteristics?

We believe every leadership team CAN and SHOULD be a DREAM TEAM!

Life is too short, and we invest too many hours at work, to settle for anything less!
