2 time management myths —that may be sabotaging your results

Strong time management skills are critical for leaders.

They’re required to do things like:

  1. casting vision for your team
  2. aligning goals to achieve the vision
  3. removing barriers
  4. facilitating results
  5. (ideally!) coaching the team toward success—individually and collectively

What do all these things have in common?

THEY TAKE TIME.

To know how to improve our time management skills—which is really our ability to prioritize, organize & execute

…we have to first address the myths we may believe that can negatively affect our results:

MYTH 1.

“I don’t have enough time.”

The reality is: we have the exact same amount of time as everyone else on the planet.

24 hours a day.

7 days a week.

The question isn’t how much time we have, but how we’re investing it.

MYTH 2.

“I just can’t get everything done.”

To some extent, this may be true. You may not be able to get EVERYthing done.

But that’s not what’s important.

The goal is not to get everything done but to get the RIGHT THINGS done.

Here are 3 simple steps to help you bust the time myths and regain your power to LEAD and LEVERAGE your time:

#1 CLARIFY.

Stabilize yourself by getting clear on what your REAL priorities are—challenging yourself to rethink them. If your current priorities align with your values, keep them. If not, change them.

#2 IDENTIFY.

Where are you investing your time? Are you allowing yourself to get sucked into the unimportant, the urgent, or others’ priorities? Dig deeper to find what pressures may be influencing your decisions for where you’re spending time.

#3 SIMPLIFY.

Release the nonessentials. Also, look for quicker, easier, and more efficient ways of accomplishing the things that ARE priorities. I like to say: if it’s not a high payoff activity, AUTOMATE, DELEGATE, or ELIMINATE.

As a coach, when I hear someone say, “I don’t have time” or “I just can’t get everything done”

…it’s a signal that there may be an opportunity for a shift in mindset or an upgrade in skillset.
