You can’t control everything as a leader.
But there is ONE thing we do have complete control over.
We have 100% control of how we RESPOND to what happens in life and work…
And this RESPONSE-ability determines our level of resilience.
Many years ago BEFORE Covid, I was sitting at my (home office) desk designing a coaching program for a client. My (then 15 year old) daughter kept coming in and interrupting me.
The third time, I dropped my hands to my the desk and said, “Oh my goodness…sweet girl (yes…that is a southern term)…you’re frustrating me with the interruptions.”
She replied calmly, “Now mom, you know I don’t have the power to frustrate you. YOU are CHOOSING to be frustrated.”
Ha! Now, anyone from the outside looking in might have thought she was being sassy or disrespectful.
But she wasn’t – she was right! She was repeating what she’d heard me say SO many times.
You see, I taught my kids the coaching and leadership concepts I’ve learned through the years: Like being truly accountable is taking 100% responsibility for how we RESPOND.
I smiled and said, “You know what, you’re right! So I’m going to set a new boundary. I need one hour to complete this work. After that we can talk.”
She agreed and happily walked out.
My point is this…
No matter how crazy things get at work or in our personal lives, we have 100% control over how we respond, which means we CAN be 100% accountable…and this determines our ultimate level of resilience.
When we realize and own this reality, it allows us to move from a reactive state (victim) to becoming a creative action taker (empowered)!
