As a leader, do you feel like you’re constantly putting out fires? This may be why…
Most leaders either OVERFUNCTION or MICROMANAGE.
OVERFUNCTIONING = focusing more on low pay off tasks than necessary.
As a leader, you should ideally be focusing 75% of your time on HIGH PAYOFF activities.
The rest you should delegate, automate, eliminate, simplify or outsource.
THIS is how you leverage time, instead of being a victim to what seems like a lack of it.
MICROMANAGING = when you delegate something & then insert yourself constantly back into the process to check up, ask questions or direct.
This screams, “I don’t trust you” & breaks relationships.
If you’re an “overfunctioner,” get clear about what ONLY YOU CAN DO as the leader.
If you’re doing things someone else can/should be doing, put a plan in place to get support, no excuses.
To overcome micromanaging, avoid delegating & dumping AND management by ‘abdication’. Learn the art & science of delegating effectively.
To lead by example, we must leverage our time to focus on the things that truly move the needle – and not allow ourselves to be constantly derailed by the ‘urgent.’
Are you clear on what your HIGH PAYOFF ACTIVITIES are? If so what % of your time are you consistently focusing on them?
