Have you ever been asked to reach a bold goal—but didn’t have the time, budget, or resources to make it happen?
That’s exactly what Coach Cathy Rush faced when she stepped into one of the most unlikely coaching roles in sports history.
If you’ve ever looked at your team and thought:
😰 “We’re not aligned.”
😰 “We’re stuck in the same habits.”
😰 “I’m constantly managing conflict in the team.”
😰 “How in the world are we going to hit our goal?!”
Don’t worry, you’re not the only one.
I was so honored to meet and talk with one of the most inspiring coaches I’ve ever met: Coach Cathy Rush.
In 1971, Cathy Rush stepped in as the coach of a small women’s basketball team at Immaculata College in Pennsylvania. She had:
❌ No big-name recruits
❌ No budget
❌ No gym (yes, literally!)
And yet, just one year later, she led that team to win the 1972 national championship. Then again in 1973. And again in 1974!
Coach Rush retired with a 149–15 record. And the story doesn’t stop there—Sony made a movie about her in 2009 called The Mighty Macs.
Here’s what she shared with me about her leadership—and how every lesson applies to today’s teams.
5 Leadership Lessons from Coach Cathy Rush
🎯 Start with vision, stay aligned.
Cathy’s vision was simple: Win. No gym? No money? No problem. The vision never changed—only the strategy did. She rallied her team around it with focus and creativity.
🎯 No one is above the ‘dirty job.’
Every team member must be willing to do the unglamorous work—and understand how it helps the team win. The magic is in the buy-in.
🎯 Great coaches know their players.
She knew her players’ strengths and blind spots. She resolved conflict early. She coached individuals while building a team.
🎯 Be flexible and adapt fast.
Winning teams don’t cling to one method. They adjust. Leaders must be willing to evolve their approach when the game changes.
🎯 Celebrate and connect along the way.
Yes, they won championships—but they also had fun. Relationships and joy were part of the strategy.
I’ll never forget this statement she made during our conversation:
The truth is—every team reflects their leader. Their tone. Their clarity. Their resilience. Their flexibility. (Or the lack thereof)
If you don’t like the personality—or culture—of your team… it might be time to look in the mirror.
