“I think I’m part of the problem,” she said in amazement as she looked down at one of her assessment scores.
This was a leader participating in our Leadership BootCamp program.
She shared with us that she had an employee who she’d been trying to ‘coach up’ to help improve his metrics for MONTHS.
She wanted him to be successful and thought she’d tried everything – had even worked with HR to place him on a Personal Improvement Plan (aka PIP), but was worried he was going to lose his job.
It wasn’t until she discovered the intensity of HER OWN NATURAL WIRING in the session that she realized she was (unknowingly) part of the problem.
We chatted further and she committed to setting up a one-on-one with her employee when she returned to the office.
So, they met and she shared what she had learned about her natural wiring from the assessment and asked him:
“Do you sometimes feel like you’re drinking out of a firehose when we talk?”
The employee was quiet for a moment.
Finally, he said, “Honestly, I don’t get half of what you tell me.”
That was all she needed to hear to confirm what she suspected. She explained her recent awareness of her assessment scores to him and committed to adjusting her approach.
Together, they implemented strategies to CLOSE THE GAP. As a result, his performance metrics IMPROVED!
Not only did he NOT lose his job, but he was later PROMOTED into a supervisor role!
It was a terrific example of a leader being open to deeper self-awareness and also being willing to do the often-uncomfortable work of growing as a leader.
The AWARENESS, and her willingness to take ACTION on the awareness, helped her coach and develop a person with much value to offer the company—a person that she and the company would have otherwise lost.
This is why we cannot ignore or bypass Phase 01 of our program—Discover. WHO WE ARE really is HOW WE LEAD.
You can’t flunk how you’re wired. And you are never limited by your natural tendencies or what you score on an assessment.
Getting feedback from an assessment, however, is great for self-awareness and to better understand human behavior in general.
You can own and celebrate your areas of strength and then look for ways to adapt, grow and manage any risk areas in the future.
This assessment is just one of the many tools and resources we’ll be offering in our 2022 LEADERSHIP BOOTCAMP, a 12-month, virtual leadership development program that transforms leaders from ‘BOSS’ to ‘COACH’ by equipping them with The Coach Approach to Leadership™ principles.
If you want to develop yourself or your team as COACH LEADERS, so you can reach your goals faster, the Leadership Bootcamp could be a perfect fit!
The deadline to enroll for the Spring program is February 15th.
