“I think I’m part of the problem,” she said.
She looked down at one of her assessment scores in shock.
This was a leader in a company participating in our development program. She had an employee who she’d been trying to help improve his metrics for months.
She thought she’d tried everything & was worried he was going to lose his job.
It wasn’t until she discovered the intensity of her OWN leadership style that she realized SHE was (unknowingly) part of the problem.
So she set up a meeting with her employee & asked, “Do you sometimes feel like you’re drinking out of a firehose when we talk?”
The employee was quiet for a moment. Finally he said, “Honestly, I don’t get half of what you say.”
That was all she needed to hear to commit to improve her approach.
Together they implemented strategies like:
-Giving a heads up to problem solve BEFORE meetings
-Clarifying communication in writing
-Checking in regularly
As a result, performance metrics improved.
Not only did he NOT lose his job, but he was later PROMOTED into a supervisory role.
The Coach Approach to Leadership™ principles helped her coach & develop a huge asset she and the company would have otherwise lost.
