1 Thing We Don’t Talk About in Corporate

by | May 15, 2024

…but maybe we should…

We know that a thriving company culture and high levels of employee engagement are a competitive advantage.

Yet we often don’t pay attention to the quality of our relationships and we ignore communication breakdowns inside the walls of corporate.

So, what’s the 1 thing we don’t often talk about in corporate?

  . . . Forgiveness . . .

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen leaders and employees get triggered or offended.

The result?

  • Breakdowns in teamwork
  • Poor communication
  • Team members playing the blame game
  • Slowed or stalled progress toward goals
  • Internal stress for those involved
  • Friction or animosity among the team

But instead of talking about it, they bury the hatchet with the handle sticking out (anxiously awaiting the next time they’ll need to use it).

The solution?

Work toward forgiveness with a mutually agreed upon resolution.

Here’s how…

Step #1

Address It Privately 1:1

  • Express your concerns calmly and respectfully.
  • Listen openly and actively to their perspective, with empathy and understanding.
  • Focus on finding common ground and explore ideas for a mutually acceptable solution.

Step #2

Get Additional Support

  • If the issue remains unresolved, mutually seek the assistance of a trusted colleague or mediator.
  • Someone who:
    • Is impartial and objective
    • Can facilitate constructive communication between the two of you
    • Will help identify underlying issues and potential solutions

Step #3

Jointly Escalate if Needed

  • If the issue persists, escalate it together to a supervisor, higher level of leadership or HR.
  • “Jointly escalating” will reduce the likelihood of breaking trust further, and will increase the potential for resolution and forgiveness.

By following these three steps, individuals can work toward forgiveness so they can truly bury the hatchet…WITHOUT the handle sticking outpromoting open communication, collaboration, and accountability throughout the team.
